Using Example
Using examples in lecturing in teaching is a very good way to involve student in communicating. Once a teacher teaches a point and then uses an example as a way of making the point, students can then think of similar examples. In this manner the point taught is related to some experience the student has had. Therefore, making it relative to the student.

I feel that using an example in the lecture process is vital for a student to retain any information delivered by the instructor. I currently give instructions related to the healthcare setting. After discussing a topic in the classroom with the students I give them a past situation from my healthcare career. The visual they get from my story telling usually makes an impact on them as I can see by their facial expressions. The examples I use are note worthy and are real life experiences.
I have had similar experiences when relating to students real situations that have occurred in the fashion industry. The student interest increases and prompts discussion as well as questioning further. So many students have come back later and told me how important those real life experiences being shared were to their learning experience.
Another example that can be used to spark memory are pictures. Present a picture and ask questions about it. The picture can be taken apart and just one item in the picture used, and students can recall things or events to relate to the item. I haven't used this but it seems a good way to get students to talk.

Greetings Joshula!
Good idea! I have cut pictures into what becomes puzzle pieces and asked a group to put it together and then discuss and share with the class.
Keep up the good work!

I always tell my students it is not about me, but about them. They need to be able to connect the material to their lives to help with retention. They appreciate being able to share their own experiences as well, which is a part of cooperative learning!
Students participation in providing examples from their own life experiences leads to better evaluation of students understanding of relevance to the issues presented.
Hi Karine!
And - relevance is the learning outcome that we want!
Good job!

I use my "real-life examples" of what i am teaching so that the students can see how the points I am teaching can be applied to situations they may encounter in thier careers.
I teach like that, I read the powerpoint then give an example and the students understand better.
