Strategies for Working with Students with Learning Needs
What are some strategies that you have used when working with students with learning needs?
Individualized attention and continually monitoring progress. A lot of feedback.
You bet! Keeping them informed on how they are doing is a key part to helping these learners succeed.

I have used alot of hands on and repitition in the classroom and of course one on one time witht he students.
I will offer help to them and engage with them privatly if needed
The personal contact & help for students who are struggling is a great way to connect with them. This then leads to further opportunities to help them.

Being repetitive and providing the students with learning needs concrete examples and illustrations for application of the information helps the students retain the information better.
Reagan,
Great point made here. When we are working with students with learning needs, often the more concrete we can be, the better.

The concept of reinforcing the learning with different techniques would be effective. The idea of using the reading of a section which includes the terms which you have just taught to get the visual impact and recognition of the word and its meaning, besides just hearing it.
I have printed lecture notes with blanks for my students to fill-in as I lecture. This helps the students who need more time in note taking, keep up.
just make things as simple as possible so they dont get thinking they cannot do this or just of dropping out of class cause they just cant get it
when working with students with learning disabilties, i have to consistantly have one on one time and always use repitative strategies to make sure they are understand the classwork
I have one student who English is their second language. The class is very fast paced and can be very frustraiting for her. After my inital instruction i recap with her to fill in the gaps.
This is also achance to help with the organizational process of her work area. It is expecially important to celebrate successes with her during this transitional time.
I find that using lots of relevant examples help student understanding. At our school, we are very high on tutoring too. I think the one-on-one with individual students gives them more confidence that they can be successful. Once they begin to get some confidence, I think it helps their motivation.
Teaching online offers challenges in two ways. First, it is not always apparent that English is not the native language for a student. Second, once one reviews a written assignment by an individual who falls into this category, it is difficult to offer assistance. One can provide feedback on issues with the written grammar by using the Revision mode. One can also encourage the student to work with a tutor or to make use of a lab that would support their English writing efforts.
Beth,
A great idea that helps reach a variety of the senses & addresses different learning styles.

Julia,
Again a great idea. By doing this you're not drawing attention to any one or two students but it helps those who do struggle in this area.
Ryan
Daniel,
Yes, I think the challenge is making things simple and clear for the students while still providing the challenge they need to feel they've accomplished the task.
Ryan
Yes & great job of focusing on helping students & going the extra mile when needed. That step of recapping to fill in the gaps is a huge benefit.

Pictures and movies works great
