Good approach. They are training to enter their chosen career field so they need to know what your expectations are as you help them move forward toward meeting their goal of being successful in that career.

I have found that grading rubrics and written standards incorporated into course materials (syllabus, etc) allow students to refer back to those during the course. Expectations revisited can improve chances for success and limit the "I didn't know" excuses.
