A pre-test gives me some idea of their retention of basic information from pre-requisite courses. Also their real life experiences if they are currently working in the particular field I am instruction. It also gives me a baseline on how "basic" my fundamentals discussion will be and the pace at which it will go. Of course the class will dictate the pace, but at least I have a baseline to start with.
In my drawing classes, I have them complete a pre-test drawing to determine their skill level so I can adjust accordingly. At the end I offer the same drawing but as a post test so the students can see how far they've come in their skills.
I find it very helpful in motivating students.
Rtee,
This is a good idea because it illustrates to the students that they have greatly expanded their skills sets and increased their abilities. I am sure they amazed at how far they have come in a very short period of time.
