Reflective Thinking
I like to problem solve situations or topics of discussion that utilizes bodily kinesthetic intelligence. Often times i will dicuss a subject matter like making a hollandaise sauce. As i am asking for methodology by thinking ahead of what is the next step would be. My students are now asked to become involved in critical thinking and problem solving for the final outcomes. I then even go farther by asking them how to fix this sauce after it has broke. I love this exercise as it really gets them to think for themselves.
Glenn,
I agree about how effective this method can be. Not to mention one of my favorite sauces just happens to hollandaise. I can already visualize the different ways I can put this sauce to work and get my taste buds going.

Reflective Thinking methods can be very helpful in solving real problems in our life. Here is the process of reflective thinking:
1. Define the Problem: 2. Analyze the Problem in Two Major Ways:
a. Identify the Severity and the Scope of the Problem.
b. Identify the Causes of the Problem. (What can change about what is contributing to the problem?)
3. Identify a Solution.
4. Brainstorm a Wide Range of Potential Solutions that Meet the Proposed Criteria.
5. Narrow Your Choice to the Best Solution.
6. Evaluate the process.
make the student think for themself. they have to understand that they must be able to think on their feet and yet adults can not in today age with out their computers. they just don't have the know how. we need to bring back the days of the thinker. where have they gone?
Peter,
The successful students will be those that acquire this ability. If they can think critically and problem solve they are going to move forward in their careers. If they can't then they are going to flat line early and stay there. It is going to be up to them how they shape their careers and develop their problem solving skill set.

A great way to enhance learning. This helps students with critical thinking and see different practical applications of a concept. Makes learning exciting therefore externships are an important part of learning experiences
Reflective thinking is an afterthought. It is important to look back and examine all the evidences, information, observations, researches, conversations with others. Only then can an effective judgement be arrived at.
Fraternidad,
Good point because without reflective thinking the error rate increases. Stepping back and reflecting on the situations, limitations and possibilities enables solutions to arrived at that will work in that specific setting and that is what the goal of problem solving is about.

Very true! For what it's worth, an organization that excels at reflective thinking is the U.S. Army.... after every exercise and activity, those involved sit down in an "after action review" and discuss what happened, what worked, what didn't go so well, and things to do differently the next time. Generally, invaluable sessions!
Randy,
Yes, they do. I have learned much from their approach and how they strive to learn from every situation and expand their knowledge base to be ready when the next situation comes along.
