Reflective thoughts
Showing the student that good evaluation of actions plays an important role in making the right choices in life.
John,
If you can do an evaluation of the steps and consequences then you are a long way along the problem solving path. Good judgement is based upon a lot of decisions and many of those decisions are based upon bad judgement. It is best to make those bad decisions in a class as a part of the learning process while a student because there is the safety net of being in school and having access to a learning leader that can help with the learning process required to be a good problem solver.

The value of teaching students that good evaluation of actions is important in making the right choices should be a major goal of educators. Before making major choices reflective thought which require mental effort is important. The students should pause and take the time to research and study the situation before making judgments and taking action. The students actions should be based upon educated facts based on research.
Theodore,
Pause, think, reflect, analyze and then proceed. You make a number of very good points about how these elements need to be a part of the reflective thought process.

ALYSON,
What are some good evaluation techniques that you teach your students that you can share with us?

Ask my students where do want to be in 5 years, children, business and what kind of boss well you be. Reflect and start being this person now.
Simply remind them that most of what they have learned was from doing things wrong first without thinking it out.
We can all learn by making a mistake. That is how most things have been learned. If we don't try we never know for sure so If the instructor can get a student to brake it down by what they know as fact the answer will be left.
Franz,
Being one that an speak from having made my share of mistakes over the years I can appreciate where you are coming from. By taking what we have learned from our mistakes and applying this knowledge to the current situation that we are working on we can start to make more accurate and better decisions about how to solve problems.

They say that practice makes perfect, but practicing imperfectly only leads to imperfect. Practicing then using reflective thinking to determine the errors of action, then practicing with new knowledge can lead to perfection.
ArLene,
Great point because imperfection only leads to more mistakes without career improvement. We need to help our students to get the basics and then expand their expertise from there so their practice will be right and focused on skill development.

As much as we try to get the students to do this it seems this generation is always in a hurry. Once the mistake is made then they slow down and start to reflect especially when it cost them money
If we could get our students to do more of this, maybe they would have a better understanding to their actions.
