Something New
I have notice that older adult are easier to teach than students 18-2, because non traditional student know what they what at this point. However, the tradtitional students feel that have all the time in the world. Great topic!
I can say that I have encountered the same thing, but with me it is the older students that give me the most work and stress. I teach math, so for older students, even thought they know what they want, they have a lot of trouble understanding and getting away from the fears of math. It seems like they have a pre conceived notion that since they were not able to do good in math as youngsters, they won’t be able to get it yet again. So I am having trouble keeping them motivated and getting through to them. I am having trouble convincing them that, if you only try, you can get this.
Any thoughts?
Hi Dhimitraq,
Can you put your math problems and lectures into practical life experience examples that the older students can relate to? You might want to have some exercises at the beginning of the course that they can do, either alone or working in a group. The exercises should be very basic to help them be successful. This little bit of success will help them to get over their fears and start to open up to the possibilities of being successful in math.

I try to give the younger students a sense of limited time in the class by reminding them daily how many days we have been in the class and how many days are left. This helps to focus the energy on a daily basis.
I have also found it easier to teach older adult students because they do have that life experience and it makes it easier to relate to them. They also have more respect for other classmates and the instructor. However, the younger students do bring a very lively personality to the group.
My older students seem to be the most understanding, patient, have less dicipline issues & thorough with their completed work.
I agree. My older students are certainly more aware of the "real world" need to succeed in their new career choice. Actually, I am more frustrated when the administration choses to coddle the younger students and encourages the instructors to "make allowances" for late assignments, missed classes, poor test performance, etc. If they can't even come to class, how can they expect to hold a job?
