First class...

I always tell students to write on a sheet of paper their life goals at the moment. Starting from for the class... to the degree... to just having graduated... to being steady... and all the way to the point at which they feel they have completed everything they ever wanted to achieve...

Hi Navinthran,
Good way to help students to capture a vision of their futures. They need to be able to see how what they are studying will impact on their careers and their lives.

I teach English so on the first day I offer a interesting writing assignment. I pair the students up and they have 15 mins. to interview their partner and then 30 mins. to write a biography about their partner. They then introduce their partners to the class and turn in their biography for a free 100.

The first class is always the best class. It is a reminder of the challenges as well as the possibilities in which how they will succeed in school as well as in the class. from that point, every class will be and will help students what they need to know and how to get to the point where they need to be.

Remembering names is essential to establishing rapport with students.

Knowing names is important as it makes the students feel that they are more than just a number -

I totally agree. I have the students write their names on tent cards to set in front of them for the first day of class. I make it my business to learn their names before the second class. I also believe its not only important to know their names, but to use them too. I always greet my students by name, even if its just walking by them in the hallway. "Hi John", etc. Makes them feel important to add that personal touch!

I find it helpful for the first week when I talk with a student they are to give me their name first then answer questions. Its very helpful!

As an instructor showing you care and respect for your students goes a long way it sort of sets the tone for the course. By learning their names on the first day it goes a long way but it also sets them at ease about the course.
