older versus younger students

I often find that my older students express frustration regarding how much the younger students are "babied" along.....for example, allowed extra chances or extra time to complete projects. I don't allow this in my classes, but it is tolerated in other classes. The older students express their frustration to me. How do I handle this situation without denigrating other instructors?

Cheryl,
Tough, tough situation. Not sure of a clear cut answer. I would explain to all students that the standards for your course are what they are and that they are based upon standards that they will face in the work world. Explain that the reason you are holding to those standards is that you want to make the transition for them from classroom to work as easy as possible and if they have the "soft skills" ingrained into their work habits they are going to be more successful.

Don't let the students complain to you about other classes and second chances, etc.. Just say that other instructors do things their way but in here things are done this way for the reasons that were stated. The key is to keep the focus on your class as much as possible.

I agree with you in your response to Cheryl. I have used this approach by pointing out that my class is set up along the lines of a professional environment and to set an example for the class as to how industry works in their chosen field. So far there has been a positive response. It has also helped that on occasion they are given an occasional second chance on a test or assignment that went the wrong way.

Yes, Dr. Meers. I try to hold them accountable for their actions or in this case, inactions, equally across the board.

After working in the field for over thirty years, I know that these "soft skills" are what the employers are checking closely!

Hi Cheryl,

I understand your dilemma. I have experienced this as well. To some degree, I find that the older students sort of view the younger students in a negative manner. The older students view themselves as more mature with more life experiences; therefore, some of them feel that the younger students don't have much to bring to the class.

I find that working in groups and combining the older and younger students together, they begin to gain a mutual respect. In regards to to the younger students being "babied", I feel that instructors must draw a line in the sand and stick with their choices. All students should be give the same opportunities regardless of age.
