source of student motivation

I started a new term today and as we did the ice breaker, I wrote down something each student said that was a motivation for them to start this course of study. This couse has reminded me how important the students original motivation for starting the program is in keeping the motivation alive. I always keep working with motivational toools from what i hear them say currently, but remembering their hot button in the begining and support it as need is very important.

My dean at my school started introducing her self to the students at orientation. Then she passes at a paper asking them why did the choose this field. A week later she calls them to ask them how they are doing. Then she follow ups with again this time she has them fill out another paper the same questions and she is seeing if their passion for the field has changed. By the dean working with us on retention it has turned around. Th students like to see that everybody has their interest in heart.

Nanette,
Thanks for sharing this strategy with us. I know other colleges will be able to use this method to increase their student retention numbers.

Darlene,
I like this strategy. It keeps the students engaged throughout the duration of the course and is a building block approach to the learning process.

a little laughter in the classroom puts the students at ease.I agree with you.

Dorothy,
Always a welcome addition to learning that day. Sharing a laugh increases focus by students not to mention it helps to brighten the day.
