what can one do to make tough topic understandable?
Vincent,
Break the content down into small chunks of content. Cover it and then give examples. Have the students work on case studies or problems so they immediately use the newly acquired content. This will keep them interested.

Break it down, give example, demonstrate the relevance and then you can also ask a student to offer an example of that topic, sometimes seeing it through another students perspective can be helpful to their peers.
I work with 10 min blocks it works
Roy,
Thanks for sharing your success with us. This will help other instructors that are thinking about using this method.

That's a hard one. If the students are having a hard time understanding the topic then I would look for something that interacts with the topic that the students would understand or could relate to. This might make it easier for them to understand it better.
