Retention

I think retention begins with the first day of class. Just letting them know what the days are going to be filled with, some of the things they will learn, keeps them coming back day after day.

hey John,
I agree, I've taught a basic intro to math class, and I could see the fear in some of the student's faces the first day. By re-assuring them that I'll help them get through it, by the end of the class I could sense the change in atmosphere.

I agree wholeheartedly. The tone of the class and the way that you present material should be clear to all students from the first day so that there is no guess work. If they know what to expect and what is expected of a successful student then you have already set up a win for your students.
