General Strategy for Student Retention

How do we engourage our students when they fail a test and feel like they can't succeed?

Barbara,
I sit down with such student and show them where they have been successful and where they need additional work. Then I create a specific learning plan for them in terms of next steps for them to follow to be successful. Then I ask them if they are willing to put forth the effort to complete the work and acquire the content. Then we go from there with the learning plan.

it is best to go over where they succeeded and where they did not do so well. Ask the student how they think they do well on certain parts of the test and how and why they were not able to do the same on the other parts of the test. Most likely the student will be able to see theat there is a difference in the amount of study time or effort in the least performed areas of the test.

Julia,
Good strategy. This way they can see how if they will put forth the effort they can be successful as demonstrated in the success they had with the course to date.
