Greeting
I always greet each student cheerfully with a smile and positive comment. Then before we begin class,I ask if any one has a good news minuet,[pertaining to class]that they would like to share with every one it sets a great mood ready to begin the lesson.
Angela,
This little bit of chat and interaction is very important to helping students to see they have a supportive instructor. In addition, they can get settled into the course as this interaction occurs. I do the same with my classes and I get the same outcomes as you. It is will worth it to me and my students.

Acknowledging and interacting with students out class (in the hallway, office hours, in more relaxed environments on campus) shows them you also care about them beyond the classroom. Following up on a comment they made, event they shared with you keeps them connected and is important in developing retention and trust.

Not only do I greet the students I ask that they greet the other class mates as well. This is also done in the classroom, and in the hallways as well. Another thing I try to pass along during this time is to truly listen to what is bein expressed by the student, as many of us wear many hats it is easy to hear someone speak but to listen is the key.
April,
I like your approach. There is an old saying that "When you are listening your are learning." and I think it fits here. By listening you can learn so much about students and then be able to target your support of them more accurately.

I spend probably the first ten minutes of my shift greeting and talking to all of my students. A quick chat lets them know that I care and also helps me gauge what sort of emotional state each student is in.
I agree in greeting students everyday as they walk in my class. I feel that it is important because it makes the students feel comfortable and open up. Sometimes asking them or a simple Hello, can brighten up their day.
Lisa,
A simple and easy to do action that results in earning the respect and developing rapport with the students. Good strategy for instructors to follow.

I always greet my students at every class period with a good morning/good afternoon along with a smile. It does make a big difference in our classroom atmosphere.
Kristy,
Something as simple as a smile and a greeting can pay off big with students, especially those having a tough day. Something like this form of greeting sets the tone for a positive class to come.
