The Human Factor
respecting your students and understanding their needs, they will do better in school, if you support your students they will feel more confident about asking if they don't understand an assignment. You give respect to gain respect.
Maria,
Respect is a powerful two way human exchange that will help students to develop rapport with you and feel a part of the class.

I agree. Instructors should always treat students with respect. As students see that their instructor understands their needs, they will often put forth more effort to learn the material.
I certainly agree that when we give our students the same respect that we expect for them to give to us, it develops a sense of harmony within the classroom arena. I have seen some really rude instructors in my days, and I believe that they are like this to set some type of standard in the class to get the student to abide to what they say, but in actuality, this can cause students to respond in a negative manner; then nobody wins.

Lisa,
So true about the need for a positive attitude. A positive attitude is the foundation for earning the respect of students and along with respect will come the development of rapport. This is a win win for everyone when present.

Respect is one of many traits that an instructor teaches by setting an example. Whatever it is that we want our students to be, first and foremost we must be ourselves.
James,
Key point. Respect and rapport are two essential elements needed for teaching and learning success.
