Motivaton
What are the keys to successful motivation of students?
Vincent,
Finding what generates their interest and appeals to their needs in relation to the value of the course content. Make connections between what they are learning and how they will use it to increase their income and create a future for themselves.

Often I've have them research employment opportunities in their desired careers, then we would discuss them…example if a position requires a certain level of education..why would that be important if a position requires a certain level of experience why would that be important…then we factor in what it take to actually get there, how to start working on "that" position what does it take (besides) the current course they are taking. I also make sure to let them know that they are competition with others that are going to go after that position therefore it is important to be able to communicate and project confidence…I try to make it relevant in what employers would be seeking.
Gemma,
Like your style. You are making it real for your students while giving them a realistic picture of what their career is going to be like. You are helping them to see how much value they can create for themselves by hard work and self discipline. Keep up the good work.

I love playing short games to learn about things students have done in their past to find motivation. Once they share this info I like to incorporate it in the classroom.
Cindy,
I use games a lot in my classes as well. The pay off is student excitement which in turn leads to increased motivation. I also find that my students seem to recall content that they didn't realize they knew when they are in the bonus round going for the championship.

I love to encourage and motivate my students with bonus points!! I also give them the opportunity to get extra points for going the "extra mile" with bonus points if the "choose" to do homework assignments from their textbooks.
Chris,
This gives them something to work for and the result will be more learning on their part. Not to mention the excitement they get from having earned these bonus points.

We have students who get done in class and figure they are done for the day and go into class and get on you tube. What are some ideas that can get them motivated when they think they know all the answers ?
Judd,
For students like these I have case studies that I share with them so they can expand their understanding of the relevancy and application of the content being presented. My students really like case studies because they help them to develop their expertise in critical thinking and problem solving.
