Student retention
How do you motivate a student that has difficulty coming to class be cause of personal life occurances?
Kenia,
Try to create a personal connection with that students. See if you can find out the main reason why he or she is unable to make it to class, such as transportation, child care, etc.. Then see if you or the Student Assistance Office can find a way to provide support to overcome this barrier and get the individual back on track.

Sometimes I am successful in troubleshooting the problem with the student. Some students do not have the life skills necessary for figuring out the problem on their own. I can say that many times I have found problems that I have never encountered and I utilize my peers to help me to find solutions to these challenges. Also, for issues that may need public assistance, I call 211 or access 211.org. They are a non-profit with United Way that help with many community outreach centers.
Sharon,
Good way to help students and let them know you are there to support them as well as letting them know that you know how to help them find the support and assistance they need that is beyond your classroom. This has to be a great comfort to the students that are working through major life challenges.

speak with your student often. Let them know you care about their education. Depending on the issue they are dealing with you can offer counseling or suggestions to help or find help in their personal lives and to continue on with school.
Hi Kenia,
I find it very beneficial when I have a one on one with the student. It shows them that their education is just as important to you as it is for them. Students often feel like we wouldn't understand or relate to their personal issues but showing care and concern often motivates them to continue their studies. Sometimes its a simple matter of changing their shift or reducing their course load.
