missed assignments

There is no real consequence for not turning in homework in my classes except that the student does not learn the material and may not perform well on the tests. These adults decide if they want to be responsible or not. However, to motivate them, do you think it would be a good idea to offer some type of bonus for turning in the complete work on time? Or is that just rewarding them for something they're supposed to be doing anyway?

Hi Deborah,
I am so traditional. I think students homework should be graded. Afterall, they did put time into this.
Patricia

I agree that the homework should be graded. I don't see it as a "reward" and many of my students are disturbed by the fact that they are earning the same degree as the person who did the bare minimum. Having graded assignments at least provides some incentive to do the work so the information can be better understood and retained. In theory all students would care and be responsible enough to do the work without constant reminders. In the end however, they will be a reflection on you and the school if they pass through your class and barely know more than when they started.

I too agree that homework should be graded. We ask the students to put in some time and effort into doing these homeworks, in return, we should look at them thoroughly to see if they comprehend what is being discussed in class. Homework is a great barometer for comprhension.

Hi Kim,
Yes, we need to know how our students are progressing, and homework helps us to make this measurement. Some students may have the mentality, well she/he is not going to grade it, so I am not going to do it.
Patricia

Hi Stacey,
I am baffled as to why an instructor would not give credit for homework. Students need to be given notice for doing their work. Homework is a great tool to determine the student's mastery level of a particular concept. Instructors should want to know how their students are doing.
Patricia

Not only is homework a barometer for comprehension, it also allows the students to being the first steps for preparing for any upcoming tests.

I agree. If students don't think they are going to be graded on there effort they will stop working hard it.

Hi Sarah,
I concur. We must give our students something to work hard for. . . grade the assignments!
Patricia

Our homework is worth 10% of the student's grade.
We stress this to our students and share an example to the benefit of turning all of it. ( If a student is between grades and completes all of their homework, they can receive the higher grade)

Yes, our program gives the students 10% of their final grade based on turning in their homework. They should receive credit for work completed.

Hi Monica,
I like this policy! I am going to try to have it implemented at my educational institution. This is very encouraging to students.
Patricia

I agree that homwork should be checked. I check the daily the homwork each day in calss, then we go over the answers. I do this so the workbook can be used as study guide later. I also can then see if a studetn did read and fill in the answers or just copy the answers.

Hi Kristine,
We need to stay on top of what our students are doing, and one way to do that is to follow up on assignments.
Patricia

Hi Kristine

I agree also homework should be graded and it needs to be turned in on time. Not only will it help them with studing but they can think of it as traing for deadlines for work get ready for that job that requires them to be done. They need to learn to be responsible. They need to remember that most of them are paying for this not Mommy and Daddy.

Hi Kathy,
We must continue to try to teach our students about the importance of deadlines. Deadlines are established to be adhered to, not broken. Deadlines are crucial in the workplace, and students need to know that they are to be met in the workplace, just as they should be met in the classroom.
Patricia

Deborah, I believe that this is rewarding something that should be done already. However, I do incorporate HW as 5% of his/her grade, and I do NOT accept any HW after its due date. Even with attaching a grade to it, some students still do not hand in assignments.

I like the idea of not taking homework after the due date. Of course there are exceptions. You create more work for yourself by accepting late work all the time. More importantly, it holds the entire class from progressing with new material as you work to keep all the students current.

As long as homework is at an "adult learner" level

Hi Ruth,
How do you handle missed assignments?
