Late assignments

Students should be responsible for a time line in being expected to turn the assignment by the time required. The real world has no excuses for TARDIES!

Hi Christian,
That's right! One of my pet peeves, being late! Do what you have to do and do it with timeliness. In the real world tardiness is not going to be tolerated.

Patricia Scales

That's right! On time performance at school and/or work is expected and is not negotiable. Tardiness is a sign of laziness

Students who submit their assignments later than the other students should lose credit. This happens in my classes on a regular basis. Even though their assignmaents are submitted late, students expect full credit. I usually tell them that they are held responsible for submitting their assignments on time, and the workplace will not tolerate not meeeting deadlines.

Krista,

Your point is well taken. This happens frequently with all sorts of excuses which will only earn them a pink slip in real life. We do our best as teachers but at the end of the day, each student has to be responsible and punctual.

Hi John,
You can have very simple quizzes at the top of the hour to encourage students to get to class on time. If the student misses the quiz they get a 0. You can make the quiz very simple so that the ones who are there on time can get an easy 100. You can also implement an attendance and participation grade.

What can be done by instructors with students that are constantly late? Also, what if you, for example, grade HW on a day when the student is absent? How would you justify giving the student that missed class a grade?

Hi Tammy,
Late work needs to be a strict policy, simply because this type of behavior is not going to be tolerated in the workplace.

Patricia Scales

I agree with you. We are very strict about our students handing in late work if they do, ten points is deducted each day.

Hi Rich,
Your students should appreciate you implementing this practice. There are a lot of instructors that will not take late work.

Patricia Scales

I feel late work should be accepted with point deduction.

Hi Frank,
Students need to be held accountable for their work and penalized accordingly if deadlines are not met. In the real world deadlines are crucial.

Patricia Scales

I agree. My students are given a due date and told that they will be docked points if the assignment is late.

Hi Joey,
I concur! Consistency is key! Students must realize that deadlines must be adhered to or else.

Patricia Scales

Yes, that is right. The students should be held accountable for their actions at all times. All assignments should have a deadline. If a student does not meet the deadline by submitting a late assignment, he or she should be penalized for it. The best way to penalize a student on a late assignment is by taking out points from the assignment grade. The Instructor has to be consistent when penalizing the students.

Hi Pam,
I agree! This is where academic freedom comes into play.

Patricia Scales

It should be up to each instructor whether or not they will accept late work or not

Hi Julie,
I concur! We have to help mold our students into becoming valuable employees in all areas.

Patricia Scales

Hi Dahlia,
You are on point! Employers are not going to tolerate any type of slackness in the workplace. The employees time will be short lived if they are not up to par.

Patricia Scales

You have to hold students accountable, so they can learn responsibility in their jobs. No excuses on the job so it should start in the classrooms.
