It has helped me to call on the students that seem to have difficulties concentrating and asking them to stay after class. I usually would discuss my observation and ask what is the difficulty on their side. I very kindly tell them that their behaviour needs to improve for their own benefit. More than usually, if you show them that you care about their success, they will start to improve their behaviour.
Hi Mary,
You are so right, letting them know that you care and want them to learn the material can go a long ways. I had a student who had such a bad attitude and when she missed two times in a row, I emailed her and told her I was concerned about her and that she had the potential to do great things in her profession. She emailed me back and said I was the first instructor who had ever encouraged her – isn’t that sad? Then I understood! Sometimes a seemingly small act can make a big difference.

Hi Robert,
At times, you have to share what the punishment can possbily be with rude students to get them to humble themselves. Some students have the attitude you can not do anything to me...well, this is when you have to show them you can, but at the same time do all that you can to savage their opportunity to obtain a college education, if at all possbile.

Take it to the higher level as well. Make sure they understand how this behavior will impact them in future endeavors (earning reputation, poor ratings, dismissal, etc.).
I find that calling on them to answer simple questions in class can be helpful as well, they feel more involved.
