redirect or reword their inappropriate questions to the topic of discussion if possible. Adk the to give an example of how their comment applies to the subject being discussed.
I agree that rewording what we (teachers) hear as offensive and inappropriate is a good strategy. This is a very subtle way to imply and inappropriate comment/ question. I have found throughout my experience that this is enough for students to realize their inappropriateness.
