What are some ways that you use to keep your distance with students? Many times I have chatty students who want to know about my personal life. I do my best to keep things professional, but what are some tips to get better at this?

Hi Madelina,
Based on the way you carry yourself, students should pick up the boundaries. Some instructors are way too loose with students, and the students feel there are no boundaries, therefore, they regard the instructor as one of them.

I see this as an area we are constantly challenged on with the change of students and is one of those areas we need to have boundaries set and know how to handle right away. Having those boundaries makes a big difference when you start getting quizzed.
Hi LeAnna,
This is certainly good way to teach students abut personal issue/opinions. Students must be taught those things that are acceptable and unacceptable in the work environment.

I let my students know on the first day and remind them as needed, how health care professionals personal issues and opinions should not be shared with patients and that we should always put our patients care first. whenever a topic comes up in class that invites personal opions based on morals i always play devils advocate so my students are unaware of my personal opinions.
Hi Bobbi,
I keep my distance with students by focusing strictly on business; I make it a point not to bring personal into play. Whenever students want to know about your personal life, let them know nicely it's personal lets talk about something else...it works, and they get the picture.
