Appearance

In the Navy, in business and in the classroom, one's initial appearance is important as a first step in commanding respect. Good grooming is a given. Then, I favor wearing a suit (or sport jacket and well pressed slacks), clean shirt (of course!),tie and shined shoes. Comments from my students show that my appearance helps them to decide that I am a professional. During demonstrations, the jacket comes off, the sleeves are folled up, and I project interest and excitement about the project.

Hi Robert,
I can tell you lead by example. Appearance speaks volume about your professionalism.

Patricia Scales

I agree your appearance in the classroom should be professional. Your students look up to you and want to see a leader.

My appearance also reflects on what they should look like after they graduate. They also need to be professional (whatever that may be in their position). Their instructors are their examples in the real world.

I agree that an important aspect of our appearance is our clothing, but I also think our demeanor, as part of our appearance, is just as important. How I react to students, other faculty and my behavior in the classroom speaks volumes about me as a professional.

Instructors need to set a good example - Students literally see that the instructor cares about his or her appearance and is, indeed, a professional. Well stated Robert

Professionalism starts in the classroom. By setting an example on first day of class shows student you are a professional and that this is the way professionals need to be in the outside world. If learned from day one by the time they start their career outside of school they should be well verse in the word "professionalism". Dress, mannerism, communication, general appearance all now have their meaning

Hi Diane,
I agree! As instructors, we have to show and tell our students what is meant by professionalism. Actions really speak louder than words in some cases when it comes to professionalism.

Appearance may be the first impression about you that you give to your student's. Also a level of respect is associated with your appearance so being professional in your appearance is very important.

in medical field instruction, I dislike scrubs. if able wear professional slacks, shirts, etc

Hi Michael,
As instructors, we must look the part, if students are required to wear scrubs, instructors must be required to wear them also. I too love the idea of professional attire (slacks, shirt, tie, polished shoes, etc.)

Patricia Scales

I agree. I always encourage my students to have a clean, pressed (original white color) labcoat.

The first impression is the lasting impression

Nice!!!
