using technology in the classroom
I use power points mixed with video clips so as to spice up the power point presentations. Use Youtube and other sites to show movies.
Gregory,
Have you or your institution ever thought about using Workplace Simulations? Work related simulations have been used for yeard to teach & train chefs and those in the wanted to be involved in the medical profession.
Antoine Lewis
yes! We use quick fire challanges used in the lab to recreate real situations in the restaurant, feeling of pressure working on the line and practicing proper communication between kitchen staff.
Gregory,
This sounds like a good teaching method for seeing who can handle the elements when things are hetic and going at a rapid pace in the kitchen but still prepare qaulity dishes.

One of our student learning outcomes is information management and technical literacy. As instructors, we use power points, video clips, on line case studies, CDs/DVDs movies and we find Youtube to be helpful, too. We encourage our students to develop and enhance their technical literacy by utilizing the available technology like for example when they do individual or group presentations. It's amazing to see that a lot of them really do a very good job! Using technology in the classroom will benefit students in building their career in the future.
Cecilia,
Technical literacy is a term of the time we live in with distance education. Technology has changed what we teach and how we teach. Technical literacy is very important as we often times assume everyone is technologically savvy.

I also use power point and a mixture of other media in my classroom. As an English teacher, I also encourage use of the internet for research purposes. This takes a great deal of set-up, however. Students need instruction in evaluating sources that they find on sites. Too many times, they are satisfied with the first sites that pop up and may be reticent to go further or to evaluate. The human element--the instructor--is still the most valuable resource in any classroom.
James,
It’s the way that instructors use PowerPoint that can encourage student learning by strategically employing it to engage students in the learning process, incorporating classroom assessment techniques and using methods geared toward reaching multiple learning styles.Good to know you involve some media as much of media appeals to visual and auditory learning styles, enabling students to learn through seeing the action of the film or play and hearing the language, word choices, culture and rhythm.

The using of power points, video playes and other technology in the classroom are imporntant to encourage the student's participation in class, and may expand the thinking of our students.
Niurka,
Technology such as ppt and video today allows for better classroom engagement. This helps students with various learning styles.

The Lectures we use are from a power point but, during the lecture we have demo's to help break up the lecture and give our learners a state change. Then durring lab they have a variety of on-line video's to view that help to reinforce the lecture as well as there learning objectives. Unfortunatley some students start watching you-tube videos that have nothing to do with the class or what we are trying to teach them.
Dale,
It is awesome that you are using various teaching methods to keep the students engaged as they may vary in learning styles. As it relates to you tube it can be a distraction but also a great tool and reminder the student why we are here. Other methods that may be helpful are case studies, and reflection.

I have been introduced to enhanced power point by a younger teacher. You can add links and embed videos to the slides. It also helps to add movement adn colors to the slides. Let them fade or blink or something other than black words on a white background. Some of the things that we think of as distractions to the younger students are part of their patterns now. We think they aren't paying attention but they do both. They hear and almost need to disconnect at times.
Monte,
Many times audience’s attention span to PowerPoint is not good as they have often been exposed to PowerPoint since high school. Including audio and video gets the classroom attention and makes for a better learning and teaching experience.
Antoine Lewis
We do the same except, we do not have the videos. We instead provide them with websites for research on technical related topics.
francisco,
Student seem to enjoy researching websites vs. looking in the text to seek out the right answer/response. We as faculty need to provide reputable sites and research tips if not already doing so.
