How do you get the disengaged student to participate?
Shaun, I have found asking for their involvement in a variety of ways is the best approach. Using competition, fun, active methods that their peers enjoy many times will influence and engage them.

When I have a student comment on a term and expand with an example during review sessions, most of the students retain that student led information for the exam. Sometimes when I give more time for students to speak, I help my students learn better.

Many times the shy or introvert students are hesitant to participate so I will engage them and encourage them in the team games. I will divide the students in the teams and assign the team captains which is the more introverted to force them to participate and in the end they become more comfortable and will be more vocal later on.
sheila, this example shows that you are modeling to the introverted students how to interact with a variety of people. Most will need that skill in the job market.
