Whole Brain Organizer
This is by far the activity I am most excited to try. When trying to remember difficult words often of latin origin that are not frequently used in everyday vocabulary, silly words, phrases, or picture association is best. I remember struggling in organinc chemistry trying to remember different compounds and how to identify them. The one that stands out to me (still today 10 years later) are the Ester formulas. We called them "Ester bunnies" because of the amounts of oxygen in the formula (lots of O's) so we remembered them as eggs. Silly but it definitely helped me remember.
Courtney, if you yourself see the value of the visual tie to content, I know you will use this activity well.

This is just what I need to use in my class . I think that is great. Jackie McManus
Many people love this activity because it taps into all three major learning styles, auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. It is a highly memorable method and a quick way to learn critical content.
Denisse, I hope this is one you will use for critical content. It is a multi-use teaching tool.

I know this activity really "speaks" to a lot of learners, but it's tough for me to come up with them on my own. I use any and all that have been "passed down to me" from other instructors (and even students), but would love a resource to pull these from. Does anyone know if one exists?
Forrest, I would suggest any of the "instant Teaching Tools" books I have written. You can find them if you use a search engine. Thanks for asking.

I think you will find this type of activity so helpful to most students. It reminded me of when I was in school (so many years ago) and we were learning to look at blood smears. There was what was called Howell Jolly bodies. It was near Christmas and we called them Holly Jolly bodies and to this day..it is what helps me remember!
Linda, isn't it funny how what is different is easier to remember, even if it is simple. Thanks for sharing your memories here.

I agree. This seems like a very fun and effective learning activity. I will definitely use this one in my classroom.
I wish some of my former professors had utilized this type of activity in some of my more difficult courses- it would have helped me tremendously!!!
