Using a rubric

I find the use of rubrics critically important to my students' success. When I am able to provide clear, concise, and consistent feedback to all of my students their level of understanding improves. It also allows them to correct their mistakes and hopefully resubmit for a higher grade.

Using rubric for grading has two advantages:

(a) It allows me to explain to my students what are the components of the assessment are more important, and what learning objectives are covered; and
(b) after the assessment is completed, it would allow me to be more consistent and "fair" when grading different students, as I have a similar "yardstick" applied to all and every student assignment creating more consistency in the summative assessments. Regards.

Walt,

I'm glad you allow them to review the rubric prior to the assignment. It's a good thing for self-assessment. Thanks!

I not only use a Rubric to provide feedback after a student completes an assignment, I allow the students to review it before they begin an assignment. This helps them understand which learning objectives are most important and to focus their efforts on meeting them in order to earn the most points on the assignment. This also helps the student from being discouraged when working hard, but not earning high points because they worked on something other than the main learning objectives.

Sarrah,

Yes, a good rubric should help students just like that. They also help the instructor. Thanks.

I agree. Rubrics allow students to understand where they went wrong in an assignment. Seeing the assignment broken down into parts can help them to think more critically about the topic.

Gloria,

We all have to find what works for us. As long as the feedback is meaningful and helps the students improve - that's the key!

It took a lot of practice time for me with the rubric. Initially, I felt like the feedback was too much information. Eventually, I narrowed it down to a couple of sentences.

Martin,

It takes practice to get more proficient in creating rubrics. You can involve students in the process too. Thanks.

I totally agree that rubrics are a key to success for all students. This however is still a large gap in my abilities as well. I am not always proficient in creating rubrics. I think a lot of the reason is that when I was in school we never had them. To get better at this, I always review rubrics of other instructors and then design my own, and then ask for feedback.

Kelly,

Yes, the point value is important so students know what is "worth" more than other components and it helps them focus. Nice job.

Hi Traci,
I agree. I also find making sure each of the points in the rubric directly coming from the assignment makes students more aware of what they need/should know from finishing the project.
Thanks,
Kelly

Traci,

Glad to hear you connect rubrics to students' success. How appropriate. Thanks!
