Stakeholders

The course stated that the basic stakeholders are: students, institution, and teaching and professional community. Are there other stakeholders like the community, investors in the university, etc, ??

Fred,

I think it depends on the course. Is it an intro course or capstone course? I have heard faculty say the students aren't our customers, the community is...the students are our products. Interesting way to think about it.

I agree with the statement about students being our products. In the community that I live in it was required to have an advisory board that was composed of members of the community and industry that had experience with a program. If an institution is only looking at what the institution needs then they are producing a product that might not be needed in the community and then the students would not have jobs. If an institution looks to the community and the needs of the a particular industry then it will be a win-win for both the students and the community. There are more than three stakeholders.

Tricia

Patricia,

Anytime you an develop a win-win situation, it is well worth the effort. This includes the community and world as a whole. Thank you.

I also believe the investors or if it is a public institution, the city or state officials are also the stakeholders, because their decision can have effect on the students and the faculty.

Charles,

There are s many stakeholders in the education "business.". That is so right. Thanks.

I believe the community, including government officials are important stakeholders in the educational environment.

Each learning institution has its own personality and relationship to the community. An important aspect of the educational environment is having and developing that relationship with the community to help with retention and loyalty.

Margaret,

The stakeholders can be expanded to many in the educational system and community. You bring up a good point. Thanks!

I, too feel that it depends on the course. A good example is the city of High Point, NC.(My home town). It is known as the Furniture Capital of the World. A large percentage of its income is from manufacturing and selling furniture. As a result, the university (High Point University- my Alma mater) has a Home Furnishings major and the students intern with various companies in the city. This makes the community a definite stakeholder as the university's curriculum directly affects the quality of employees; therefore, the city's economy.

Paula

Paula,

Definitely. I think a lot of communities influence the curriculum. There are many stakeholders in our own communities. It is important for us to work with our community members. Thanks for bringing that up in this forum.
