Communication is key in an online course. I make sure my students know I am available via email, phone, and text. This gives them multiple ways to reach me and allows them to utilize whichever method they are most comfortable with. Many students seem to utilize texting more than any other method. I believe this is so because it allows them a quick individualized answer without phone communication.
I definitely agree, Traci. I have found that students do prefer email and text over phone calls. If I call a student and leave a message, I usually get a text back. I will say, that I love that it cuts down on phone tag situations, but depending on the question sometimes phone calls are just quicker and provide more clarity without leaving much up to interpretation.
Gloria and Traci,
Communication is the BIG "C" word when it comes to online education. Thanks so much for your ideas.
Traci,
Communication in every form is very important. I send out emails to each student on Tuesday after the end ends to let them know what is incomplete for that week. Most students appreciate the email and respond with a date to complete the assignment.
NORMA,
I believe the same thing. The instructors must model professionalism and the students will follow. Thanks!
The instructor is the key in this genre. He or she has to set the pace and professionalism is number one.

Traci,
Communication is essential to help students understand the expectations, assignments, etc. and move toward achieving the learning objectives. When we communicate in a professional manner, the students will follow our lead.
Thank you.
