Communication is key

The one thing that I constantly try to drive home with my students is that they should never be afraid to reach out to me with questions. I have found that in the online environment, students are far less likely to ask questions. They would rather just take the chance and submit an assignment or test even though they did not fully understand the material. My welcome video lets them know that I am here for them, I was an online student myself at one time, and that communication is key.

NICOLE,

I emphasize the same. I always tell them that proactive communication is so much better than reactive communication. Thanks for emphasizing this as well.

I am very proactive in my online classroom regarding communication. My students are encouraged to ask questions through the classroom discussion board forum, emails to me, or to even call me. Communication is essential for success whether in an online environment or in an on-campus classroom.

Joyce,

Proactive is much better than reactive. Thanks for emphasizing this.

I love the idea of a welcome video. I, too, think that letting students know that I am available for any and all questions is key. I think that the video introduction probably helps your students feel connected to you, and I may try this approach!
