Tying Feedback to Outcomes

It is essential that student feedback is in the form of encouragement. Yes we need to communicate failure to students if they are not meeting rubric and grading standards but we still want them to be successful.

It is important o guide the student to do the work while also maintaining the guide on the side.

Robin ,

Feedback should be provided to help the students improve. Therefore, encouragement is a key component. Thanks for you input.

I try to use the sandwich approach when dealing with students who are not meeting expectations but are participating. I focus on a positive aspect of their comment/post, then tell them how to improve their participation, and then give them direct, positive action they can do right away to create a better post (ex: Heidi, could you tell us how to came to believe Tony was not the murderer?). Encouragement and constructive criticism need to go hand-in-hand.

Lisa,

The sandwich approach works in many situations. I also heard this weekend in a teacher training the terms "kisses and best wishes." NOT literally! Ha! But when thinking about feedback. Interesting. Thanks!
