The rubric has a two-fold purpose. It guides the student in knowing what is expected of his performance and how it will be evaluated. It guides the teacher in her assessment of the student by laying down specific quantifications that are consistent across the student population.

The role of a rubric is to provide the instructor standardized guidelines for grading. It helps to reduce variance in grading as it should list the important points that are necessary in the assignment for completion.
For a student the rubric can be an excellent guideline to follow as the assignment is completed since it usually lists and explains the "points" that the instructor is looking for in the assignment.
Rubrics are helpful guidelines for student and instructor so that assignments are well defined and there is a point of reference when completing and grading them.

I think that the grading rubric serves a number of roles in an online course. First of all it provides clear expectations for assignments and feedback to students from the beginning of the course. The rubric can serve as a guide for students when they are completing assignments and discussions. This will allow students to feel comfortable about the work they are submitting. The rubric also makes grading easier for the instructor. It serves as a reminder to look for the important points hightlighted in the rubric when grading student assignments.
I have just started using a rubric for discussion forum feedback. For those of you who have used it in the past, do you feel that it has helped to foster more meaningful discussions by students?

I have used a rubric for discussion boards and I believe the discussions have been richer and fuller because students understand better what they should be posting. Thanks for input in these posting.
The role of the rubric is to set clear expectations for the students and to ensure that the objectives of the assignment or activity are met.
A rubric also allows the instructor to map the objectives to the student's mastery in meeting the objectives. The rubric should be included with personalized feedback to provide students with an additional learning opportunity. "Informative" feedback.

A rubric is a multi-purpose scoring guide for assessing student products and performances. This tool works in a number of different ways to advance student learning, and has great potential in particular for non-traditional, first generation, and minority students. In addition, rubrics improve teaching, contribute to sound assessment, and are an important source of information for program improvement.

Rubrics are great. With rubrics, assessments are somewhat easy. This is important because it helps the instructor know what the student has learned and also lets the student know where they are lacking understanding.
Since the “classrooms†are made up of many different types of learners, across generations, the rubrics is great for offering some standardization.
