Educating for online presence?

Good Evening,

I'm curious if anyone has used this type of format as an opportunity to teach students about how they appear online and how to present themselves knowing that it is often a tool used by hiring managers to research and find out what kind of person you are and the activities you take part in? I find myself telling students to update their email addresses to something more professional and I see the profile pictures that they upload to the school's site...yikes.

I look forward to everyone's thoughts!

Milka,

That is where we have to facilitate the discussion. There are so many examples with consequences of posting anything. The Snapchat issue can be a great start now.

I agree that students should understand how they appear online and how different audiences will interpret the information that is stated contingent on the way it is stated. Unfortunately, it is difficult to illustrate the value of this to students, especially when they believe that persception is irrelevant.

Marie,

Great post. We actually make our freshmen go through a social media workshop that explains the different types of social media and the role professionalism plays in all of them. We also share the stories we hear and see about inappropriate social media behavior

I do believe teaching a student how to present himself or herself online is part of education. I too have seen inappropriate email addresses and photos posted on Starfish. I would love to see a short course with pictures of dos and don'ts.

Kimberly,

I think that is an interesting idea. I am thinking it would be interesting to interview and/or survey managers to see if they use facebook to check their students. This would provide some interesting information.
