Students' Preparedness Level

Blogging is OK if used with students who can effectively read and write in English. Many of my students come from a diverse background. For some, English is their second language, while others lack academic preparedness and possess very basic levels of communication skills. These students may not be able to effectively blog.

Miriam,

It may be a way for your students to practice their written skills, but I do understand it may not be a very good measurement of what they know.

As mentioned above, some students may lack the level of academic preparedness to be successful using this type of media. Blooms taxonomy could be used to access the level of the students contributions. Although blogging is useful in many activities, student profiles would be better for this media. I would think that this would be more appropriate at the bachelors or masters level of education.

Donna,

That is an interesting point. You want to make sure that the purpose of using this matches the outcomes of the course. If the student isn't academically prepared for the assignment, they won't be prepared for the course.
