How can a 360-degree measurement be implemented when using games and simulations in training? In your opinion, is it an effective measurement for games and simulations?

A 360 assessment can be implemented by interviewing relevant people the student interacts with. They may include supervisors, clients, customers, co-workers, etc. Multiple measurements should be taken at intervals to determine changes, if any.

Ron,

Thank you for your response. I did not see any statement on whether you feel that 360 assessments are effective for games and simulations. What are the advantages of using this assessment for games and what are the challenges?

A 360-degree measurement allows the instructor to understand how the student has progressed in terms of their overall knowledge and skills. I believe this is a useful assessment when it is appropriately implemented. There needs to be time between the initial assessment and the follow-up. If both are done within too short of a period then the assessment may not provide data that is truly assessing what the student may have learned because there has been insufficient time for synthesis of the information. It is more valuable for assessments to be separated by time that allows the learner to think about the knowledge and skills gains from the game or simulation as this can allow for improved comprehension on how to apply the new knowledge and skills.

I think a 360º measurement would work really well in multiplayer environment, where all the players have assigned tasks. Maybe an interview and some peer review. I don't know how effective it would be but you have to start somewhere.

A 360 degree assessment can be an effective tool to assess learners and the game. It can also offer many areas for improving many aspects of the game based on learners’ engagement and the transforming skill set of learners. However, there is also a point in which the assessment could be flawed based on the many factors involved with engagement of learners and their previous knowledge and skill set. In looking at the data, of course there will be variables and this has to be observed and monitored to determine any adjustment in the game to better assist the students.

I never heard of a 350 degree assessment before. I did a quick internet search. It seems to be used a great deal in business.

I think it is a very effective method of assessment because the person being evaluated would have the benefit of feedback from multiple sources.

In a game situation, I think you would have to have multiple players or multiple teams. Each person could evaluate the performance of the other players. The instructor could also evaluate the performance. Of course, we would have to define the learning objectives and provide criteria for different levels of evaluation. But I believe this could be very effective.
