corrective vs. negative feedback
When I critique my students artwork, I tell good point of view first and then give corrective corrective feedback..sometimes negative feedback. Giving a negative feedback is always bad or make them encouraged? What exactly the difference between corrective and negative feedback? I think, both the corrective and negative deliver the same ideas...just a different of expressing.
For example, in art work critique, elements are well organized...however, you'd better think of different colors for this part..it is corrective. This color does not go well with other colors..it is negative. But these two delivers same meaning to change colors.
Hi JungYun,
You raise some excellent points and questions. It's always good, of course, to start with something positive before providing feedback that is more challenging. I always try as well to state my observations before reactions - just to ensure that I am on the same page as the student and that I am not misreading the situation. As you note, when providing feedback to students on their work, for example, there is a decided difference between negative feedback and constructive (perhaps not corrective) feedback. Negative feedback is just that - negative - and typically focuses more on the person as opposed to the work or the situation. Constructive feedback, however, praises the positive elements, focuses on the activity or assignment, encourages response form the student, provides suggestions for improvement and why, and sets the tone for a follow up. As you said, the big difference is how the feedback is expressed and, in return, received and perceived!
Thanks for your observations!

on our campus, we give corrective feedback to the students on production day and it's their responsibility to listen and take the feedback to heart. When it comes time for the students proactical exam, that is when the students should use the advice of our corrective feedback
That really is so beneficial for the student.
Nice post =)
It is important at any time to give feedback to student.
They are here to learn and become better as they go .
To improve they need to know where they are standing , good or bad , to be able to understand what is a good performance or good day vs a bad day or bad performance.
Lionel,
Absolutely, thanks! Additionally, students need to be clear as to what is expected of them (and vice versa)so that feedback on outcomes is based on a foundation.
