feedback skills
To me, in the process of giving back, one must be open-minded so he/she can receive the information and use it in a positive way.
Criticizing people never really works. There is a fine line between criticism and making a point, esp. a negative one. I think many times people don;t realize how what they do affects others. In my line of work, a simple mistake can result in death so at times I must give "on the spot" feedback and if the receiver has made a mistake they need to recognize it, understand what is wrong and why they made the mistake, and how not to make it again.
Providing feedback whether good or bad was an issue for me in the past. I do acknowledge that there are times where I need to re-visit various methods when it comes to conducting those types of sessions. When you’re in the actual moment, it tends to be a bit challenging for an individual to act in the appropriate manner; while taking the proper steps in making sure the session doesn’t get out of hand. Are there any other methods that a manager/leader can utilize in order to strengthen their overall process of providing feedback.
Hi Stacie,
As you note, feedback can be challenging because of the dynamics of communication and because feedback, though intended to be constructive, is often associated with an issue or performance improvement and can be perceived as negative. I always try to choose the best time and place to provide feedback, and try to always explain my observation of the situation as opposed to any feelings or reactions. This keeps the feedback above board. I also have the respondent provide his/her observations and, if there is an action plan of improvement involved, have the employee give suggestions as to what alternatives may exist and/or what actions are needed. As you referenced, giving feedback is really a process. Thanks for your comments.
