Reversing a PJ
Have you ever considered a student for a PJ but later decided to decline the process? If so, why?
I've been in this situation, I've declined later in the process for 2 reasons, the student was turning in conflicting information & unable to provide required documentation. Also, his story would change each time someone talked to him.
Kelly,
Based on your explanation of the situation you faced I can definitely see why you would have rescind or cancelled the professional judgment consideration. It is important for students to provide information that the Financial Aid team feel confident in the accuracy. It is important to make sure all information collect support your decision to approve or deny.
Sincerely,
Chyrl Ayers
Yes. Once all the data was collected the professional judgment did not actually benefit the student, so we declined to proceed with the professional judgment. The request was for an EFC adjustment.
Nichole,
I completely understand the type of situation you have described. I often say that sometimes a PJ is not the best process for some students. It is important to evaluate each situation and process in the most appropriate manner for the student.
Sincerely,
Chyrl Ayers
Yes, a student had indicated that he was on unemployment for the past yr and once we started to collect the necessary documents his EFC was still high the student failed to provide full documentation from unemployment.
Mayra,
When determining whether or not you should institute your professional judgment and use estimated income over actual income it is important to look at how much if any the PJ will lower the student's need. If the EFC is still very high there would be no reason to process a PJ. Additionally, if the student is not willing or able to provide the fa administrator with the necessary documents you are not required to use the PJ proces.
