Why are The Five Keys to Work Success important for students to understand?
I think growing in your job is a key one as a lot of students start out entry level and want to move up but aren't sure how. Teaching them to dress for their future positions, learn your boss's job, work hard, help others when able and etc can set them up for success on their job for potential growth opportunities as well as continuing their education.
I read through these and thought of how they are so much about life skills. If they can adopt them in their personal life they will benefit greatly. I plan to introduce this to my classes as part of the first day policies. I can't think of a better thing to do then have them start practicing these skill now.
Shawn,
I like the way you frame the 5 Keys as a foundation upon which to build; developing these skills is an investment in your future success and career fulfillment.

The Five Keys to Work Success are important for students to understand because they are the basic building blocks of becoming a contributing member to any organization. Utilizing these steps as a starting point to ensure that they are meeting the expectations set out for them in the interview process, and in their job descriptions can allow for students to secure a foundation from which they can grow within the workplace. As they gain more experience and knowledge in the job, they will still need to maintain these basic initial building blocks, otherwise the "structure" of their job will crumble - In other words, these Five Keys to Work Success are the important factors on which a successful career can be built upon.
Robert,
I agree with you absolutely on this point. These are indeed keys to success in all areas of life; the challenge (and our job) is to give students the action steps that will work best for them to ensure that these keys are doable and sustainable.
Elizabeth Kemler
The five keys to work success are important for students to understand because the keys are really a formula for success in all areas of life. If you applied those keys to relationship it would be considered very strong and successful. I believe that as educators and mentors it our responsibility to give our students the tools to change their lives. By executing the five keys at in intern/extern it gives them a chance to practice. If they can master the concepts, they can become successful in all areas of life.
Octavia,
This is true; and if you master these keys in your internship or externship--or even volunteer work, they will help in all aspects of the job hunt and interviewing as well.
Elizabeth Kemler
Because they are the foundation to success on their job even if they do not have any experience.
Jaclyn,
The challenge is getting the students (or really anyone for that matter), to adhere to the five keys on an ongoing basis; its easy to get complacent or to start to let things slide after you've been on the job for a while.
Elizabeth Kemler
I feel that the five keys to work success are strongly related to good work ethic. If students can understand these five keys, they will excel in any position they acquire and their future will be bright.
Because the 5 keys for success are the very important and crucial in being successful not only in the job search process but in their work . Motivation, support and assistance are the keys to help students to find the right job
Theresa,
This is very good advice; students need to treat their externship the way they would a job, as there is a chance it could become a job if they demonstrate the utmost professionalism.
Elizabeth Kemler
The message I try to get across to the student who is on externship is, the Dr is depending on you to show up everyday. The office manager is too depending on you as they may not have another medical assistant to work with this Dr. If you can out then the Dr is on his own and you are not classified as being not dependable. Also, in their interview for externship, I tell them to make sure they tell them of any dates in advance they may have. This way everyone is on the same page and that they have to call the extern site as well as the school if they have to call out and give everyone proper time if it is an emergency.
Arturo,
I like your analogy to a good upbringing--something many people are not so fortunate to have, so much of the compensation for that comes from school.
Elizabeth Kemler
I think it is a profound guideline, because it offers much more than what's on the surface. These keys are also keys to life and keys on how to relate to the world. It's like getting a good upbringing, these keys are like bringing that to the workplace.
Tequilla,
I can imagine how difficult it is to transition from the school kitchen to the workplace-especially given how fast paced restaurant work is. I think you are right on target with your focus on teamwork and the importance of taking responsibility for mistakes.
Elizabeth Kemler
Without an understanding of the keys to work success, students are most likely going to have a more challenging time reaching success. It does not mean that they cannot be successful, but success comes at a much higher price when you do not have certain values in place to keep you on track. Particularly for the our culinary students, I like to stress how important teamwork and communication is in the kitchen. Some students have a hard ti me transitioning from a classroom "kitchen" environment to a "real world" environment which in most cases is more high volume and at a faster pace. The Five Keys to Work Success can give students a foundation that will help them understand the importance of being on time, communicating with the chef if they will be late or absent, and especially admitting when they've made a mistake. A mistake in the kitchen could be harmful to the health of potential customers, or if food has to be thrown out, it can be a major profit loss to the business.
B,
I could not have said it better. These keys are indeed relevant for every internship and job; you literally cannot go wrong if you hold yourself to these standards.
Elizabeth Kemler
The Five Keys to Work Success are important for students to understand because they set the framework for success with the company that they are with regardless of whether it is for an internship or a job. Each of these components could be viewed as a performance evaluation on a non-technical level. Were you at work on time? Did projects get done within the allotted time? Did you contribute to the growth of the department or company? Were you a team player? How do your coworkers view you? Have you taken steps to learn all that there is about your position and taken steps to go above and beyond? Do you present an image that reflects yourself and the company in a positive way?
All of these questions assist the student/employee in identifying how they fit within the organization. For an intern this may be the difference between an internship experience and a job offer.
