Viola, I have heard this many times. I like your idea of treating the externship search like a job search to 'up' the stakes. I would also suggest, if you have a large number of students who have gotten jobs from externships, to advertize that number; if you don't, perhaps there is some sort of impressive statistic that can be found online. Elizabeth Kemler
Shawn, I like the way you frame the 5 Keys as a foundation upon which to build; developing these skills is an investment in your future success and career fulfillment. Elizabeth Kemler
Dorothy, Yes absolutely; these are the ultimate in transferable skills. Elizabeth Kemler
Shawn, So true--and you put it perfectly! Elizabeth Kemler
Dorothy, This is great; giving them action items along with ongoing support is the ideal. Elizabeth Kemler
Shawn, The job search can certainly be a tedious and discouraging one for many students; I think your idea of returning to their long term goals as a motivational springboard makes good sense. Elizabeth Kemler
Shawn, This is great advice; students do definitely pick up on your attitude and approaching the topic with enthusiasm as you suggest will go a long way toward inspiring them even after they've graduated. Elizabeth Kemler
Robert, I agree with you absolutely on this point. These are indeed keys to success in all areas of life; the challenge (and our job) is to give students the action steps that will work best for them to ensure that these keys are doable and sustainable. Elizabeth Kemler
Cornelia, Yes, I agree that it really helps to have them consider what kinds of skills they developed even in jobs and activities not directly related to their chosen field--recognizing how many transferable skills they have can really boost confidence. Elizabeth Kemler
Cornelia, Great! I'm so glad to hear that. What kinds of things have you been doing thus far? Elizabeth Kemler
