While it might be something that some students learn in school (others may know them already); The 5 Keys are elements that will help them land a job now and in the future. If the student is able to demonstrate those skills/values during the interview process they will show that they have been reliable/successful in a previous job or in school. An employer is more likely to hire someone who demonstrates success versus someone who is just 'OK' at their job or in school.

Understanding, applying and demonstrating these keys will also help to get someone promoted - if you remain stagnant in your job your chances of being promoted are very slight over someone who can demonstrate drive, ambition, willingness to be a team player, contributes to the company's growth and who plays by the rules of the organization.

The Five Keys to Work Success are common sense tips for life!
I agree with many others that very often students do not get this life training. While I cannot undo a lifetime of (non)training, I can offer helpful tips to help them lay the foundation toward the future.

Simply put, when a student, or any of us, UNDERSTAND a principle or course of action, then it will be easier to IMPLEMENT that principle or course of action.
We must envision where a pathway can lead before we take action on it. For example, keeping our own dignity & integrity in all our dealings, especially when others don't reciprocate, leads to inner calm which leads to productivity & reliability as a human being.

It is important for student to understand the five keys to work success because will assist with developing standards for success.

Pamela,

I think it really helps to have something simple and straightforward to reference throughout your work life.

Five Keys to Work Success gives them a great foundation to build their career on. It will follow them throughout their work life.

I agree with Gary. The 5 keys can be applied to other settings; I think that the guidelines are really helpful to students who will be obtaining their first job and what the realistic expectations are from employers and what they reasonably need to expect out of themselves.

We have a wide age and maturity range of individuals that come out of our program, the Five Keys to Success are a solid foundation for ALL to start with - as many have mentioned previously, they are easily applied to our professional and private lives. We discuss these in our business course, and make sure that everyone understands the importance and value of the Five Keys, and how incorporating them into one's daily life makes success much more attainable.

Chad,

I agree absolutely with your statement. We often feel like getting the job is the big score but of course its only the beginning.

It is important for our students to understand how to get a job but once they get that job it is just as important to learn how to keep that job. So i believe learning the main objectives of the five keys will aid them in learning how to keep the job that they were able to obtain

Jennifer,

That's a great start..really good preparation.

The 5 Keys really sum up the various components of being successful in the workplace. Everyplace you would go for work wants their employees to be reliable, work hard, be a team-player, grow in their positions and be professional. At our school, we address some of these by having attendance/punctuality policies, a dress code, and clinic feedback from both clients and the instructors regarding the student's professionalism (we're a massage therapy school)...

Nicole,

I agree that it's easy to lose track. And yes, the five keys are definitely applicable in any work environment, and a helpful thing to have as a reference.

Elizabeth Kemler

The Five Keys to Work Success are important for the students to understand because these are guide lines that students can use in any work enviornment. It's so easy to lose track, but if the students continues to use these keys they will be on the right road to success.

Having some guidelines to work from, gives them the basic format on how to be successful in their work environment.

Connie,

I also see regular self-evaluation as a valuable professional as well as personal tool.

Elizabeth Kemler

I believe that incorporating the Five Keys to Work Success can assist learners in their efforts to constantly self-evaluate in an effort to improve not only their professional life but their personal life as well.

Linda,

You said it perfectly. Indeed we cannot make those kinds of assumptions.

Elizabeth Kemler

I believe that any time you can clearly define expectations, those expectations are easier to comply with. As career coaches we cannot assume all students come to us with the same qualities or knowledge. I think it is especially helpful to role play various scenarios, so that the student can anticipate problems and will feel equiped to act accordingly.

Michelle,

Yes I agree Michelle-tolerance-or better yet, acceptance is key, as is team building and I do believe the five keys help to promote both those things.
