These 5 keys apply to every aspect of their lives, not just the work environment. It is not always easy working with different personality types and these keys help promote tolerance and team building.
Holly ,
Looking at these as part of a foundation makes a lot of sense; they apply really to any job anywhere.

Susan,
Very true-regardless of what type of job you have, or your perception of the job, following these basic guidelines will benefit you in the long run.
Elizabeth Kemler
These guidelines are important because they summarize basic behaviour expectations at any workplace. Whether your job is simply an income or the job is your career, practicing these types of behaviours will build on success. Plus, a person who habitually practices a behaviour will find it easier to do.
The Five Keys are important for students to understand because they are fundamental to being successful in any profession. Throughout our lives, we are likely to change jobs and careers. Understanding the five keys provides students with a foundation that they can use to make their position with a company more secure. While no job is 100 percent secure, there are many things we can do as individuals to ensure we are giving our best and making ourselves more valuable to the company. The five keys are a good start.
Amy,
This is so true. As educators, we can never assume that all of our students have been prepared in the same way for the working world.

I think they are important also because the current generation hasn't had as much stability as others and not everyone has had the same opportunities in life. So what one might think is common sense-another doesn't. This gives everyone an opportunity be on level ground and have a firm foundation.
Gloria,
I agree, and often students don't see right away how much they could benefit by making the effort grow with the company. It's our job to remind them of the potential long term benefits.

Jennifer,
I agree that it's really helpful to have these kinds of guidelines as a reference. It's especially easy to lose track of how important these things are when you're working somewhere for an extended period of time.

I think that having any type of guidelines or goals will help you to be more successful in the workplace. Having this type of plan in place will help to keep the student on track and give them a reference if at any time they are in need of one.
Is very important because it well help you to succede in all their work, and have the opportunity to growing with the company.
Dax,
I know that these can be tough-especially if you're in a job you either weren't crazy about to begin with, or have grown tired of. Of course if you don't focus on growing even in these jobs, it will have been in many ways a waste. I like to remind students that giving your best will always ultimately pay off.

The Five Keys are not just essential for maintaining a job, but are foundational for growing in your job (which I understand is also one of the keys). Few people want to stay in the same job forever, but before they can grow, they have to show that they can be trusted with the small details. Showing that they are dependable and contributing members of a team will demonstrate that they are ready for more responsibility.
They are important because they are the foundation that all of us need to be successful. If they don't understand them it is usually because they haven't ever been told they are important. If we want them to be successful we have to feed them this information.
I agree that these kinds of things (much like dressing professionally for an interview) seem obvious, but the truth is, they're only obvious to us because we learned them at some point. Many students have not had the advantage of this kind of education-either at home or at school. This is another area where your non-judgmental approach will make all the difference.
They are important to understand because they can be applied to any situation. Knowing them provides a blueprint for handling all situations. Some of these points might be obvious to an instructor or someone who has an extensive work background, but maybe totally new to someone just entering the workworld.
