Retention

I find myself watching my students for that confused look, which is easy to spot, and I remind them that I can't read their minds... This will usually start the questions coming in.

A confused or blank expression is a give-away of a student that is probably not understanding or receiving all of the information, what concerns me;is the ones that will not try to stay awake,or the ones that come in late on a regular basis and miss out on the info that is so important to them. All this concerns me because of lack of interest by the student.

How can an instructor differentiate between lack of interest and lack of challenge?

What I do is asked a lot of questions and if I feel that they are not grasping what I am teaching I then go into more detail.

My expirence have been lack of interest, students will make many bathroom trips, come in late, etc.Lack of challenge will produce horseplay.

i think the best way for me to tell if a student has lack of interest or just plain bored with the subject is to see how they react in class in my experience a student who is bored will just phase themselfs out of the class and a person who has no interest will try to talk of subjects that interest them.

What's the next step after making these observations?

Confused looks are one way of telling if a student is getting the information. Some students that breeze through the information find it very boring because it is not challanging enough. But just by looking out into the group of students, a good teacher should be able to tell if the class is following along or is lost. Mitchell Becker
