Retention? Challenge accepted
In my experience, maintaining retention has come in the form of creating a fun but challenging environment. Instructor personallity plays a big part in retention. The ability to connect with all students through light humor and engage them in learning is definately a skill worth attaining.
Jeremy, are these skills you're born with or can they be learned? Are they topics for professional development sessions or an instructor mentoring program?
Our role as teachers includes the challenge of incorporate in our daily class management, the appropriate amount of retention motivation, starting with our own behavior, guide and support for students.
