Stress
It would be nice if there was a class or once a block training session to (a round table if you will) have an open discussion that the students could sign up for, they may find that they are not alone and have more in common with their fellow student. They may find answers to their questions. For example, a very real issue is not meeting not just the schools expectations, but their own as well. This type of forum may help them to meet students they can study with, and open up a whole new realm of possibilities and answers for them to stay and not leave, when they may have otherwise felt there was no other way than to quit. This could be either voluntary or mandatory depending on the history of the schools retention and attrition rates.
I believe it is difficult to alleviate the stress that a student is experiencing within their peronal life. This is why I do all that I can in order to alleviate the stress that can be experienced by students in a classroom settting.
On the very first day of class and throughout the first week of class, I let them know exactly what is expected of them academically.
For every class, they have complete written instructions for projects which I read and go over with them in detail. They are encouraged to ask questions for clarification. I also assist them in finding resources for these projects and take class time to work with them and guide them.
Also, they receive study guides for each exam at least one (1) week before the exam. The format of my exams remains constant and this helps to reduce test anxiety. Before each exam, there is a review of materials and lengthy explanations and visuals are used to make sure that each student is well prepared.
Each week, I create a calendar on the white board that lets the students know what is coming up for the next few weeks. This includes lectures, excursions, exams, in-class activities, holidays, due dates for projects, etc.
I agree that a self awareness session would assist many students. Each student personifies the stress, influences, problems, etc. that all are experiencing (on various levels) as there own situation to deal with. Sharing information, in a group setting, may not get everyone to give personal input, but it would give them an opportunity to know their problems are shared and they are not alone.
Very thorough,Penny. When do the students receive the written instructions for projects? At the beginning of the course or as the project is introduced?

Sounds like a very doable idea, Elizabeth. What would it take to implement it at your school? Is that something you can do or would it require clearance? Can anyone facilitate these forums or are there some special qualifications?
I agree Penny. You can not alleviate the stress that a student is experiencing in personal life, but you can let them know that you are there for them and they are in a safe place at school. Everyone needs encouragement on a consistant basis.
Sounds really good and I feel that given the pro/cons that more students will revisit the passion that had when they started on the quest for education.
