Building Team Spirit!
A school where I first taught at would have “pep-rallies†; and school sweater days..these were meant to instill pride in their school and themselves (student body makes up the school)to encourage the student to do their best and to build a stronger bond between the student and the school! The goal was to instill in the student a sense of “belongingâ€, that he/she is what makes a great school where great, successful students graduate to become successful practitioners of their trade or vocation!
I do "pep-rallies" in my classes. I get excited about the material and will throw my arms up and yell "yeah!!". Some students thimks it weird, but everyone laughs and when we are having fun everyone is learing, but they don't realize it!
I admire your enthusiasm, Rose. What subject(s) do you teach? How often does the spirit move you like this?
We have school spirit day as well. We have volly ball games, dunking booth, where the students can dunk their program directors,or they can have them lock in jail, dress up in silly clothes, or just wear school logo t-shirts, and then we also sell hotdogs, popcorn and have a great friends and family day with our students.
We try to encourage our students to get involved with outside of school activities to show them that we like to have fun too.
I'm also very big on creating positive energy throughout the class time. Getting students involved, prizes for correct answers, reward for contributions to the class are all things that can be utilized.
pep rallies are a great idea
Our campus is a motorcycle technician training school with many factory elective courses available. The students all wear the same assigned work shirts while on campus.
I feel that if a student is working towards a specific elective certifiation that some point in the process example: when they start their elective coarse that they be given an elective specific workshirt. This will give them a sense of pride for making it this far and will give them momentum to complete their goals and maybe get their mindset back on track towards succesful completion of their goals.
I think that's a great idea! I went to a large state university where most of our "pride" and "spirit" came from celebrating our sports teams. The small school I work at now doesn't have that opportunity. At the same time, I want my students to be as proud of their accomplishments and their school as I am of mine.
i do the same, when they see how excited i get about the program they tend to follow
Our college has many things going on on a regular basis to instill the fact that we want out students to be part of the school.
The way i get my students involved is our weekly quiz-off.The class is evenly divided into groups and just before our weekly chapter test we do our quiz-off.The teams ask each other questions about the chapter and three strikes your out.Works well
I get pretty excited in my Anatomy courses as well. I think it builds momentum. "I yell test tomorrow, Yaaaaaaaay!" And now that its the end of the quarter, I have a few that cheer right along with me. Progress, along with positive mindset.
