A Student's Expectation
I think the student's come to class and expect class control, so as not to disrupt their education. I believe they expect to have the topic of a lecture well laid out and rehearsed prior to class delivery and that the instructor have first hand knowledge of the subject matter. I believe they feel they should receive what they paid for, I also believe that they should know what they are supposed to receive for information, and not assume such. In the end there should be a proper explanation of what each subject matter will include at the start of a course, so the student will know if that subject matter has been covered and they have received at least what they have expected too.
Well stated. We should provide them with the same preparation that we expect them to come to class with. This behavior also has other aevatages such as modeling the behavior they will be expected to exhibit at work as well as 'giving them their money's worth' as you stated.

Absolutely true. A structured classroom envirenment is often a student's first perception of value.
Also, taking time at the conclusion of each lesson to confirm the objectives have been met gives the student the perception of value.
I think a well motivated and well prepared instructor is the key to every students success!
Santy--
That is very true. And of course, while we are spending a lot of time in this course discussing the students we also need to consider how we support our faculty so they can stay 'motivated and well prepared'...but that's another course :)

Agreed. An instructor who is passionate about their field will carry that motivation into the classroom encouraging the students about the field that they will soon enter.
We should provide them with the same preparation and excitement that we expect, when they come to class for the first time. This has other advatages such as modeling the behavior they will expecte to exhibit at work as well as 'giving them their money's worth' as you have given your expectations.
Harold--
This is a great observation--that we need to model the excitement and preparation that we expect out of them.
