I have found that computer tablet or white board usage can definately aide in my students education, but in the field that I teach I found that more students retain the information better and have a greater understanding of a systems operation through a "cause and effect" delivery method. I have lectured and/or used white board presentations on a many topics and found that allowing the student to see the normal operation of a given system and then "causing" a fault within it's normal operation and then watching the "effect" from that fault has helped more students retain their maximum… >>>
We have a little bit of a problem with helping some students with their disabilities within my organization. The reason being as that we are not allowed to ask them of their disability, but only to accomodate them with what ever their letter that they are supposed to present to the instructor at the begining of class. Most of our accomodations are for "test reads only". With that being said, sometimes it is hard for an instructor to know what extra help to give when we are technically not allowed to ask the student, but we can only observe how… >>>
This is so true, we have found that not necessarilly retention, but enrollment into additional training areas is definately down if it is made known that there are few jobs available at this time. I have had several students ask "why should I continue in the program if there are not going to hardly be any jobs when I finish". I had a perfect example of this not even two weeks ago. I had a former graduate student contact me via e-mail, telling me he has been having a hard time finding a job at his local dealership. He then… >>>
The title for my discussion comes simply from making sure the admissions department has a full understanding of what goes on within the educational facility they work for. For instance, If you are an admin rep for an automotive trade school, you should understand exactly what the curriculum will entail as the perspective student progresses through their program. So many students are not sure of exactly what they will be learning as they progress in their program, and with unexpected courses thrust upon them, at times seems to make them uneasy with their education and that's just a plan for… >>>
It sure can be. Having been Ex Military myself, definately helps motivate the student(s) when in the back of their mind they realize you know what their going through, and that at times helps them focus a little better when they realize you have or may of had the same experiences, and here you are getting them through the same experiences. I always try to re enforce that input with the understanding that all of these life experiences may throw you a curve ball from time to time, but in the end can help make you a stronger person and… >>>
I recently had a student who needed to fast track his education by staying late to attempt to complete all his required class and lab assignments. The area he was training in was his weakest point in the automotive field. This young man had the thoughts of leaving school to go train for his military duties he would soon be expected to perform as well. So, with an active military assignment and his current class assignments, hw had already started to expect the worst case outcome from fast tracking his education. Together him and I stayed after class late and… >>>
