Fears

Running a restaurant with many students who have never worked in one I find that breaking down the "big picture" in to manageable bites helps them be less apprehensive about the bigger picture of how day to day operations actually work.

Jennifer,

I have never heard of a class like this, but kudos! This is a wonderful platform for retention!!!

I teach the Critical Thinking class (among others) and having students see the 'big picture' can be hard for some, especially my black and white thinkers. I try to have students see black and white with shades of grey becasue sometimes they cannot see beyond that day, week, assignemnt, etc. Regardless of what program a student is in those critical thinking skills will come in handy in their careers and dealing with customers, clients, and patients or really whoever they come into contact with.

Ed,

Sounds like a good strategy. Using lots of unfamiliar terms can be a very intimidating experience.

I am in criminal justice and when we are speaking of legal terms and such it gets a bit overwhelming even for myself. I take small steps and make sure each student understands before moving on.

I agree. I teach respiratory therapy. The concepts are overwhelming for students. I try to control fears by allow them to verbalize during class.

It is overwhelming for th student who never done restaurant managing. I do that in the medical teaching field, we have to take "small steps' with our class, or the class will "burst" at the seams!! which we don't want.

Aaron,

Great perspective...you eat an elephant one bite at a time!
