Retention Goals
I utilize the MENTOr theory in my classes. I believe it is important for students to know what my expectations are, and that I follow the same rules. I also want my students to know I care about them, and their progress.
Letting the students know that you care about their success is key. They are looking for an experience and not just some lectures and demo.
Students must know what is expected of them or else how do the know they are on the right track. Good point.
If we as instructors do not have any retention goals I feel that the whole process of gaining success for the student is gone. Students want to know what the expectations are for the class and want to follow the rules to become more knowledgeable and also show themselves that it is possible to succeed or they would not be in school.
Patricia,
Career colleges are externally measured in terms of retention, placement and the pass rate on required exams. We all have to focus on retention as students who start college but do not finish are not getting the full value for their investment.

Before this course, I have never thought of the role secretaries, janitors, etc. play in the retention effort. an "ah ha" moment!
Dennis,
Some campuses call the receptionist the "Director of First Impressions." The FA folks are really key to retention.
